May 2006 Activity - Tall Tales and Short Stories

At our regular meeting held on 03 May 2006 at the Brantford Public Library, our members told the following tales.

Hugh Sutherland shared the famous folk story about, "Davey Croket and the Halley's Comet", and recounted in this rip-roarin' tall tale, where Davy Crockett is asked by the President to save the world from the speeding Halley's Comet. Davy hops on the comet and flies into the sky to complete his important mission.

Katie Hunt Told a her version of a story about called, "Mr. Mac Solves a Problem". This story demonstrated that there are many ingenious ways to enduce children to do the right thing. (Lipstick of mirrors and a mop in the toilet!)

Michael Rutledge Told a story borrowed from an old Danny Kaye audio. It was about animals who lived in a village in the midst of a drought. Normally the animals would get fresh fruit from the tree in the town centre but the tree had stopped bearing fruit. Several animals were sent into the hills to get the magic word that would save the town if they could but, say the magic word at the base of the tree. All but the lowly, slow tortoise failed but he did remember to stay, "OONGALALAYAMA" and the animals rejoiced.

Talla Henry Told an Italian tale by a noted author Italo Calvino about a King how had twin son's. His dilema was that, one would replace him as king in time but which one? The king decided that the kingdom would go to the son whose bride produced the most specials gift. It was a truely timeless story about appearances and integrity.

Maureen Henry Told a story by Rudyard Kipling called, "How the Whale got his throat.", The story is about a whale swallowing the Mariner with his infinite-resource-and-sagacity, and the raft and the jack-knife and his suspenders.

(Look up Baleen whales to see the suspenders.)

Paul Westbrook entertained with an inventive story about, "The Inescapable Prison". It was about a prisoner called Kingston Pete, who thought he could escape any prison. He let himself be caught just so he could escape again until one day he makes a fatal mistake.
