Monthly Meetings 2006

Our Supporters

The December 2006 Monthly Meeting Theme was - Strong Women

We are still not back in the Library but Laurier University has allowed us to use one of their classrooms in a building immediately next to the library. As soon as space is available we will be back in the Brantford Public Library.

Maureen Henry Maureen Henry visited with the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority to talk to the members about the purpose and goals of our Guild. While there she also related the tale of Shaharazad, legendary storyteller, who told stories for one thousand and one consecutive nights. This collection of stories, the oldest recorded collection, is known as the Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Lucy Marco Shared a story she wrote titled, "What Christmas means to me?" It was a recounting of her own childhood, growing up in Brantford and the impact her mother had made, not only on her but, on many other people with in the broadcasting range of CKPC. The story described how her mother played the part of "Mrs. Santa" on CKPC each Christmas and in answering letters send to the CKPC mail box for years from 1946 to 1956. She incorporated in the story memories of coal fired furnaces, skating at the "Artic Arena" and many other poignant recollections that we all may have shared.

Barbara Sisson Told a story she wrote about her Great Grandmother and the extremes of life in early Canada for immigrates from the British Isles. She told of bigotry, racism, brutal winters,"The Great fire of Tottingham" and through all of it the spirit to start again and rise above the hardship with a "iron will".

Tolla Henry story of "Catherine the Wise" describes the life of a girl who when she was 15 had her mother die. She was a very intelligent girl and to help her out of depression about the death of her mother, her father opened a school where she could teach anyone who wish to learn for free. The story unfolds when a young man of royalty comes to the school and Catherine slaps him on the face. He does not realize the wisdon of the "Blow" until many years later.

Michael Rutledge Recounted one of his own stories, "Captain (Morgan)Bonney". The tale is about a pirate who was the meanest, most underhanded, villian ever to sale the seven seas. The Captain had no friends and his crew were always found dead on an abandonded ship with no sign of him. It would seem that no good ever came because of this ne'r-do-well however, there was a strnge twist at the end of the tale.
